SAP BW - “What’s another Year”

“What’s another Year” a song made famous by Johnny Logan as he strode to victory in the 1980 Eurovision Song Contest. In terms of SAP BW, in one years’ time (December 2020) all support maintenance for all SAP BW solutions except for BW 7.5 will end. If you’re on a SAP BW solution (except for BW 7.5), you’ve two options: 1. Upgrade to BW 7.5 Solution (the support maintenance will end in Dec 2024). OR 2. Migrate to BW/4HANA solution (SAP’s new Enterprise Data warehouse (EDW) solution). Whatever option you go with, you potentially need to start reviewing your BW roadmap in Q1 2020 with a clear plan for the next few years. At SeaPark Consultancy, we’re helping clients learn about the “BW/4

BW/4HANA – “Come out of your ‘Shell’ and don’t go ‘Remote’”!!

In the last few weeks, SeaPark Consultancy has been evaluating BW to BW/4HANA migration options for a SAP customer. The following is the SAP Customer scenario: • BW 7.4 with a DB2 DB. • SAP BW landscape with 3 BW systems – Development, test, Production. • BW production system size of 1.3 TB. • BW source systems is low. As the BW system is not on BW 7.5 then an In-Place migration is not possible. This leaves two BW/4HANA migration options for this SAP customer which is either a (i) Shell or (ii) a Remote migration. For a remote migration, this concept requires the migration of the dataflows that is in scope to be migrated three times (one for each system in the BW landscape)

“BW on HANA the same as BW/4HANA – correct?!” No!

I recently presented at a UK & Ireland SAP User group event in Birmingham. The day before my presentation I was speaking with a SAP customer who has a BW system; I asked him if he’s planning to attend my presentation on BW/4HANA migration. His response?? “We migrated to BW on HANA two years ago and so, no offense, I don’t need to attend your session!” In a potentially awkward moment, I gently advised him that BW on HANA and BW/4HANA are separate SAP enterprise data warehouse solutions. At least with the migration from ECC to S/4HANA the naming convention is not confusing and SAP customers are aware that these are separate SAP solutions. Maybe I should start an online petition to get BW/4HANA

UK and Ireland SAP User Group (UKISUG Connect) - BW/4HANA Migration Presentation (Dec 19)

Dónal Geraghty from Seapark Consultancy and Anders Aarkrog from Innologic presenting on BW/4HANA migration at the UK and Ireland SAP User Group (UKISUG) event in Dec 19 held in International Conference Centre Birmingham. Discussions during and after the presentation really highlighted that companies are beginning to see the rationale and sense behind taking early action towards BW/4HANA migration.
